“What’s this?” He shook my notebook in my face, open to the drawing I’d just made. “It looks like a picture of Mr. Murdock. Is that what you were doing, drawing a picture of Mr. Murdock instead of paying attention to me? I work hard to prepare lessons for you, and you don’t pay attention? You draw a picture of a boy, instead? What, are you one of these perverts we read so much about these days? Huh? You one of those? I’ll bet you are. You look like you’re queer. You never say much in class, just sit back here and ogle the boys, huh? Queers are like that. They lurk, watching boys they can have their way with—planning, scheming, up to no good, dirty and disgusting. That’s what you do, isn’t it? You’re disgusting! I don’t want you in my class. I refuse to share my hard-won knowledge with faggots. Especially disrespectful ones who spend their time dreaming about doing perverted things with other boys.”
Trust me on this. You will enjoy the story. It's by Cole Parker. Need I say more?

"Oh, my God," Barry exclaimed, as he watched the new boy mince across the yard and into the school entrance, "I don't believe it."
"Did you see what he was wearing?" Grant asked, not certain he could believe his eyes. Nobody, but nobody could be that stupid; everybody knew how Barry felt about queers after one of them had made a pass at him. And everybody knew that Barry was the boss around here.
"Yes, a fucking Gay Rainbow badge. He's going to get it. This is going to be fun."
"Careful Barry, you're on your last warning about bullying."
"I know, but I'm not putting up with queers around here. We'll have to take him off school premises. Paul, find out where he lives." The fourteen-year-old, the youngest of the Q boys, nodded, wondering why Barry always picked him for that sort of job.

Summer is the best time to be a teenager, I think. Free time coupled with the ability to work as much as you could or wanted to before Fall hit. Fall was the sad time with the impending return to school and all the leaves to be raked. The only good thing about this upcoming fall was that this would be my senior year; the last I'd have to endure. Then it was on to college and a more mature mind set.
At least that was the hope.

The headlines of the local paper spread the unbelievable news that Timmy killed himself, 17 years old, 7 months away from graduation. (This story deals with suicide, but that's not the REAL story) Timmy had excellent grades, good attendance, he was friendly and according to many people that knew him, he was the every day high school boy. But Timmy's story isn't unique, it isn't the exception, Timmy's story is the rule when you are young and gay and male in the public school system where religion still dominates the thought process and the prejudices of school employees; principal, dean, teachers, etc., encourage children with similar thought patterns to act in ways that harm or kill other students. In this case it is not that the teacher, the minister, the police did not see what was happening but rather that they did not care what was happening.

Something happened by the river that day. Two strangers became friends, two lonely boys found a kindred spirit. Like the little birch trees, they turned their faces towards the sun for the warmth. Like the saplings, the boys felt the first nourishment, not from soil and water, but from knowing someone liked them just for who they are.
Life really does pass by in the blink of an eye. Read along and follow the path of life with Billy and Simon. The things they dreamed of when they were young, the fear that kept secrets, going different directions ... it's all here in this wonderfully told story.
NOTE: 17 July 2018 - Just read this story again and the tears are rolling down my face. I'm a sucker for this type of story and Grasshopper certainly has filled the bill! What an awesome story of love!

The school prided itself on being inclusive. The administration knew I was gay. They had no problem with my gender identity. Teachers, no matter how they identified gender-wise, were not interested in kids that way. Me? I just wanted to finish grading these final exam stories and relax.

    Hockey fans, get in line!
Almost every community-level team from five years old right up to fifteen has at least one, and usually three or four, girls on it. At older ages and higher levels the girls have their own leagues. Thanks to immigration, most of us didn't even notice unimportant things like skin colour, or even language. Half the teams I've played on, we all knew the words for, “Pass it over here!” in Punjabi, Farsi, Armenian, and half a dozen other languages as well as we knew them in English or French. Immigrant kids, even against their parents' wishes, wanted to play hockey, and so they did. But, there was still one exception. One huge, glaring exception. It stood unmoving, unaffected. Completely rock-solid, even today. There are no gay hockey players.
